"Dream of Unicorns"
2014 Performance The performance presents a grown woman attempting to break open a child's pinata. The woman continues to put the damaged dream horse back together after each time it is damaged, despite that only ashes pour out of the damaged fantasy, not candy or treats. |

"Rebirth"
2014 Performance This performance is a metaphor for the unanticipated struggle of cleansing and rebirth. The waves provide elemental struggle as they drown the performer and pull her closer to them. Yet as each wave passes, the performer finds clarity and focus in breathing and self-control. |

"Eugene"
2014 *Installation displayed at Artworks Trenton Young Galaxy Show* Statement: This project was an exploration in gallery space. This is a work that has elements of institutional critique and reappropriates the basic white cube. I decided to begin a series that investigates living spaces. This is a cut and pasted a bedroom scene as if it was suddenly vacated or recently lived in. I imagined this space belonging an older character who's living space had warmth and rustic charm that contrasts the generalized sterile gallery space. This work speaks to the natural human curiousity to understand and create narratives from others possessions without the presence of the character. It is a portrait if nothing else. "Grow, Let Go"
2014 Statement: This piece deals with the concept of release. Hair often comes with a lot more attachments and connections than we sometimes realize. I allowed my hair to grow very long for many years, and cutting it was both scary and relieving. It represents the things that matter most in our hearts, and how sometimes they can be the scariest and simultaneously most satisfying things we will ever experience.. I chose to keep the hair and place it in an envelope as a installation next to the projection to emphasize narrative and the sending away of fear. |

"Inside"
2014 Statement: This project is an exploration in live sound and how it can interact with video. A performance of the artist dragging a microphone on the ground creates a wind tunnel like sound that questions the emotions and setting of the video character. My work focuses on the internal experience, it tries to capture the intensity of moments when we are alone and most in-touch with ourselves. I was interested in the white noise sound, the repetitive motion used to create it, and how all these elements work together creating layers of an undisclosed internal experience. This project was about process and figuring out how many different elements can work together to create one successful piece. |
Sing Me To Sleep from Emily Culbertson on Vimeo. |
"Sing Me to Sleep"
2014 Statement: This piece challenges the art of projection, by projecting an image onto a pile of sheets. The concept became something that spoke to sleep, vulnerability, innocence, and the psychological experience of breathing. It is a very technically challenging piece but the result is something light and beautiful that speaks to more internalized instincts. The sheets distort the figure so that the focus shifts onto the sound of the peaceful breathing. This piece has transcendental qualities. |
Interruption from Emily Culbertson on Vimeo. |
"Interruption"
2014 This is an interruption piece that has the participants question the figure's status and presence. The figure is slightly camouflaged against the cement floor and passers must take the time to identify what the image is, if they even notice it. I simply wanted a piece that reflects tho moments when we are quiet observers, rather than active participants in the surroundings. |

"Full Circle"
2013 Documentation of a live performance This piece involves the artist walking on a ring of unbroken eggs. The concept provokes questions of the life cycle, death, and fertility. |
